CRY , BOY, CRY ...
Bronski Beat`s «Smalltown Boy» is such a classic. I remeber the thrill i felt when i first played Bronski Beat`s debut album «The Age Of Consent» way back in december 1984. Needless to say it made a big impact on me and my journey out of the closet ... ah, those were the days ...
«Smalltown Boy» is a favoured cover tune.
In 1996, Tori Amos used part of the song while preforming «Father Lucifer» on Late Night with David Letterman, singing the chorus «Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away».
Paradise Lost, a Gothic Metal band from England, covered «Smalltown Boy» and released it as a bonus track on their «Symbol of Life» album.
The Wounded, a Dutch Doom/Gothic Metal band, also covered «Smalltown Boy» on their debut album «The Art of Grief».
In 2006, Supermode released «Tell Me Why», containing melodic samples from «Smalltown Boy» and lyrics from another Bronski Beat track titled «Why?».
In 2007, José González covered «Smalltown Boy» and released it as a b-side on the single for his own «Down the Line».
And here is yet a new and fresh approach, from England.
