This wonderful man was a seminal part of the dance music, nightclub, and AIDS charity worlds. He was the innovator of the 12”single, one of the people most instrumental in commercially releasing a fledgling style of music called «disco», and the co-founder of West End Records, which produced legendary records by Karen Young and Taana Gardner, among others.
He was also the financial backer behind The Paradise Garage, the legendary club of all clubs.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Mel Cheren in 2005 on the release of «I Was Born This Way», charity single with vocals by Carl Bean.
If you want the truth about disco, club culture and the impact hiv and aids ha don the gay community in the 80`s i recommend you get hold of Mel Cheren`s book «My Life and the Paradise Garage: Keep Dancin'», from 2000.
The book is a truly magical recount of gay history and an introduction to DJ Culture.
